Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed ~ Genesis 12:1-3 NKJV

Abram obeyed God and set himself out for a journey he totally knew nothing about. This marked the beginning of his journey of faith with God and in God and also the beginning of his journey to greatness. God promised him that He would make him a great nation, bless him and make his name great, so that he would be a blessing. This man was not a struggling man. He was already very rich and living comfortably with his wife and servants, save for the fact that he didn’t have a child. Yet here was God promising him great things. What else was he looking forward to in his life? He was already an old man, 75 years of age, but he chose to obey. One of the greatest keys to your greatness is obedience.

If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land ~ Isaiah 1:19 ESV

There is a God who makes men. Nobody and no one can become anything worthwhile in this life unless they are made of God. I know what you are thinking. Yes, there are men and women who are great in the eyes of the world and men, but their greatness is nothing but vanity. Once they die, many die with it. But look at Abraham, God has been able to fulfill His promises to him throughout many generations. Today we call him our father of faith simply because God made Him. We are partakers of his blessings because he allowed God to work on him and with him. Your greatness is in God. It begins and ends with God. There is no shortcut to this. Any other power that promises to make you great is only out to deceive you. You may become great, but at the end of it all, you will receive nothing but regrets.

The second issue in this scripture is the blessing of God. He promised him that He would bless him and make his name great so that he would be a blessing. One of the ways we can define the blessing of God is divine empowerment to do that which you are called or created for. God was telling Abraham that he would empower him to fulfill his divine mandate. God’s blessing is not just about material stuff and things in our lives. We have a divine assignment and unless we are empowered to accomplish it, we never will. God blessed man when He created him and even after he sinned and fell short of the glory of God, He still didn’t curse him. He, instead pronounced a curse on the ground on man’s account. This means that the blessing of God is still on man. If God didn’t and couldn’t curse man, it means that no one can curse what God has already blessed.

You divine empowerment to do and accomplish what you are here for is in the blessing of God. Through this, you will be able to produce, multiply and bear fruits that endure. It’s in your fruitfulness where you become a blessing to others. You become a channel for other people to experience the goodness of God and you also empower them to do what they are created to do and this is one of the ways of expanding the kingdom of God.

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:28 ESV

Understand that you came from God and you have a greater purpose in this life. You are not a mistake or an accident and no matter how disadvantaged you may feel right now, God has your back. The fact that you are alive today means that what you are supposed to accomplish and become is not yet done. You need to shift your mind and focus on God because only He can help you to understand yourself and to unleash the greatness within you.
