Let God introduce you to you

Abraham was a man who had become so comfortable with himself that the thought of ever becoming a father was nonexistent in his mind. He must have been thrilled when God showed up in his life and commanded him to leave the place he had known and called home to a place only God knew. Not only did God knew his next place of residence, He also had great plans for his future. The Bible records;

The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your country, your relatives and your father’s home, and go to a land that I am going to show you. I will give you many descendants, and they will become a great nation. I will bless you and make your name famous, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, but I will curse those who curse you. And through you I will bless all the nations.” Genesis 12:1-3 GNT

What God was challenging Abram to do in reality was to come out of familiarity. He had to separate himself from what he knew and was used to. He was living in a land full of idols and false worship. Even though God had great plans for him, He couldn’t fulfil them while he was in the same environment doing the same things he was used to doing every day. He had to physically move and take a risk of faith to follow and worship the true God. Even though it may have been a great inconvenience for Abram, I believe that this was God’s way of introducing Himself to His servant. It was also a way of introducing Abram to himself or rather, making him know who he really was. His obedience paid off.

In reality, Abram was just a normal business man who owned several businesses and had people working for him, but in God’s sight, he was a great man. He, indeed, was a father of nations. Forget the fact that he was childless and old, God was still working on him, and His plans for him were yet to be unveiled and fulfilled. Looking at his life from human perspective, one cannot help but think that he had already made it in life, yet there was more.

We all have our own definition of success and more often than not, we look at people and admire their lives, what they have and how far they have gone in life. We tend to gauge our own success and life based on how these people are and maybe what they have, and sometimes we end up looking down on ourselves. But have you ever wondered what God can do with you and for you? Have you ever wondered who you are in the eyes of God? Your surroundings, environment, level of education, status, color or nationality should never define you. You should never allow people to define you either; they didn’t create you. God is your source and He alone can define you.

Look at Gideon for example, he was busy hiding himself from the Midianites not knowing that he had the power to crush them. Yet when God showed up, he told Gideon who he was. In other words, he introduced Gideon to himself. He did the same thing with Moses and Jeremiah, and He can do the same with you too. The most profound thing for you to see and understand here is that when God introduced these men to themselves, He defined their divine assignments. They could not have known who they were and their purposes in life without God’s involvement, and it’s the same with you. You must allow God to get involved in your life for you to know who you really are, and why you exist today.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil ~ Proverbs 3:5 -7 NIV
